Remnants of A Factory, Now Gone

I enjoy creating pieces that tell a story. While exploring New York City and following the book “Forgotten New York”, I came upon a beautiful, abandoned sugar refinery in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The Revere Sugar Refinery. It reminded me of all our stories that once were. The factory occupied an entire pier and was the livelihood of the community; it was now closed and forgotten. I returned to my studio and created several pieces, two being “Remnants of A Factory, Now Gone” and “Ruins Past, Future Possibilities”. They combined both light and shadow and stand as a reminder of the past imbued with hope for the future. When I returned to the site within the year, the entire refinery had been demolished. I was struck by how such a large structural presence could have completely vanished into thin air; all of the stories and the soul of the community were gone.
