A world traveller, the client of “Memories of Italy” chose a precious memory that transports her to the time she spent in Italy with her sister. Sharing her stories with Heather created a connection to the time and place and then transformed into a treasured artwork.
“Heather gives what was ordinary an extraordinary life. I was so impressed when I first saw her sculptures at a co-operative exhibit with at least 40 other artists. Looking at her work made me think of another time and place. I approached a piece and viewed it from different angles and it was different from each side. I did this will of the works she had displayed. I talked at length with Heather to understand where she got her ideas and came to the conclusion that her art is as deep and complex as she is.
I decided to ask her to create a memory for me, she agreed, and I was thrilled. It was a trip to Italy when my sister was celebrating 7 years cancer-free. We rented a villa in the hills outside of Lucca, a medieval walled city. As you drive down from the villa, there are a few row homes at the bottom of the road. One of them was owned by an elderly woman who would was her small sidewalk in front of her door every morning. My sister and I got in the habit of waving to her and would wave back. One afternoon, on our way back up the hill, we stopped and took a picture. The sculpture Heather created hangs on my wall at home. When my sister saw it, all of the memories of our Italian adventure came back.”— Lynda Wood-Schippling
