Dancing Within Our Walls
Oil on wood, mixed media, 24 inches x 29 inches x 7 inches
Architecturally inspired by an ancient 12th Century monastery in Dubrovnik, Croatia, this piece was a catalyst for the “Dancing Within Our Worlds” Project.
People often comment they want to climb into my pieces and explore. Creating an artwork during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, this piece delves into the challenges of isolation and the experience of being physically disconnected from our loved ones and the uncertainty of the future. Eventually, we then feel light and hope, emerging from the darkness.
After receiving a Canada Council Grant for a Digital Originals Project, I collaborated with video artist Gary Kirkham and Choreographer Michele Hopkins to create a video of Michele dancing within this artwork. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
